More than any other day in our culture, Valentine’s Day encourages us to focus on others. We buy gifts, fill out greeting cards, procure chocolate. And then we consider what heart-filled things will come our way. A note? Flowers? Dinner?
Or, we truly don’t care if anything comes back. We just want to give. But usually we leave someone out: ourselves.
We know that we must love ourselves before we can love others. So it’s only fitting that on this day dedicated to romantic expression, we honor our role in bringing happiness and love to our lives. Like the objects of our affection, we have sometimes fallen short. But we have always been there. We can always be relied on. We are special.
This year, be your own “valentine”. (You can have more than one.) Appreciate how wonderful you are. And if you want flowers or chocolate, go buy some!
